Lucas Varela (Buenos Aires, 1971) is an Argentine comics author and illustrator based in Bordeaux, France.
After graduating in Graphic Design from the University of Buenos Aires, he began his career as a cartoonist and editorial illustrator before devoting himself entirely to comics and illustration. His work has appeared in publications including FT Weekend Magazine, The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Observer, Time Out London, Clarin, La Nacion and La Vanguardia. His illustrations are represented internationally by Dutch Uncle.
Combining clear-line drawing with visual experimentation, absurdist humour and speculative fiction, Varela has developed a body of work that ranges from wordless narratives to socially and politically charged stories. He has collaborated with writers including Diego Agrimbau, Herve Bourhis and the late Carlos Trillo.
His graphic novels, published by leading European publishers including Dupuis, Dargaud, Delcourt and Tanibis, have appeared in France, Spain, Argentina and several other countries. His books include Paolo Pinocchio, The Longest Day of the Future, Michigan, L'Humain, Le Labo and the ongoing crime series American Parano. From 2013 to 2017 he was a resident at the Maison des Auteurs in Angouleme. Paolo Pinocchio was selected for the Official Selection of the Angouleme International Comics Festival, and Varela received a Gold Award from the Society for News Design for his editorial illustration work.
